November is the month where the leaves are falling off the trees, there’s a nip in the air and you wrap up warm in your winter coat, toasting marshmallows around the bonfire.
But something else has been happening in November over the last few years and it’s gathering quite a following; lots of men around the country have taken to growing facial hair…
So what do you think this is all about? Is it to keep their faces warm over the winter months? Maybe it’s to protect the skin, or cover up a lack of tan?
No, it’s all for a fantastic, charitable cause called Movember!
Next month, men all over the country will be growing moustaches. Fat ones, thin ones and some, very elaborate, all in the name of raising money for charity.
All money raised for Movember goes in to the promotion, research and support networks for men’s health issues, primarily testicular and prostate cancer, which can sometimes go undetected until advanced symptoms are recognised.
Raising money for the charity is very important but overall getting the message out about cancer is Movembers’ greatest achievement. If it helps just to get people talking about cancer or their health concerns, or even going to see their doctor, it’s doing great. Movember state that through the charity’s awareness, 62% of people have been checked out by a health professional. Movemeber is not only about raising awareness, it’s about saving lives.
Starting in Australia in 2003 by a group of friends, Movember now runs official campaigns in 21 countries around the world with over 4 million Mo Bros (that’s a fundraiser or grower), a real global community or a ‘global mateship’ as they refer to it. Movember has raised over £346 million to date and funded over 800 programmes.
Growing a moustache went out of fashion in the 80’s but now it’s back and whether you like a Charlie Chaplin, a Salvador Dali or a Tom Selleck, be proud of your moustache and get involved.
